Thoughts on Leaving 3-A SSI

Tim Rugh

In January 2003, I had the honor of stepping into the role of the first full-time Executive Director of 3-A SSI. As I now prepare to step down, I want to take a moment to express my profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve this exceptional organization. Together, we have built a strong foundation for a bright and promising future.

Over the years, the volunteers of 3-A SSI have achieved remarkable milestones that reflect your unwavering commitment to advancing food safety through hygienic design. No one could have predicted the many new programs and resources that we created, or the special culture of learning and cooperation that has emerged.  These accomplishments are a testament to your dedication and collective effort, and you should take immense pride in what has been achieved.

As with any evolving organization, 3-A SSI faces new challenges. However, I am confident that you are well-positioned to meet these with the same determination and innovation that have carried you this far. In transitioning to new leadership, I had the privilege of briefing the incoming Executive Director on several key areas of focus:

Strategic Alignment and Member Engagement: Strengthening partnerships with current member organizations while identifying new allies committed to advancing food safety will be vital. This alignment will ensure continued progress and innovation.

Programmatic Strength: A robust and engaged membership is the engine that drives 3-A SSI’s programs, whether oversight of the TPV program, education, training, or new initiatives. The dedication of the staff, no matter how skilled, can achieve success only with the collective support and energy of the membership.

Professional and Trustworthy Staff: The new leadership team must establish and affirm clear lines of authority to foster mutual trust and respect among the Executive Director, staff and leadership and maintain a professional environment that is fair, honest and equitable.

EHEDG Relations: Maintaining a positive and collaborative relationship with our European counterparts is crucial. 3-A SSI and EHEDG have forged a strong common bond, even though we take different approaches in our certificate programs and member resources.  We achieve better success for improving food safety around the world by working together, not alone.  There are many opportunities to improve and enhance this cooperation.

Addressing these challenges proactively will not only strengthen the organization but also open doors to new opportunities for growth and success.

To the many individuals who have supported me personally and professionally along this journey, I extend my heartfelt thanks. You know who you are, because I have never hesitated to express my personal appreciation for your help. My special thanks go to John Kuhnz for his leadership during this transition. We owe John and the transition team a tremendous debt of gratitude for their efforts in charting a course for 3-A SSI’s future.

As I step away, I am confident that 3-A SSI will continue to thrive under John’s leadership and the unwavering dedication of everyone in this organization. You lead a widely recognized and respected organization that truly represents the “gold standard” in hygienic design. 3-A SSI has no peers, and it has been my privilege to be part of its journey.
