3-A SSI Board of Directors Appoints New 3-A Steering Committee Chairperson

May 2024

At the 2024 3-A Annual Meeting, the 3-A SSI Board of Directors enthusiastically appointed Mr. Frank Di Mattei Chairperson of the 3-A Steering Committee following his nomination by Mr. Paul Dix of Maryland Department of Health who had fully completed his two consecutive three-year terms. We cannot thank Paul enough for his gracious time and expertise, but most of all his superior professionalism and availability. Paul is a trove of knowledge and his willingness to share his insights is very special.

Frank has been a CCE in good standing since 2018 ever since our friend, the late Richard K. Smith, CCE and namesake of our prestigious “Richard K. Smith Advancement Award” suggested his participation. Frank has served in a multitude of volunteer positions, each with their own set of important responsibilities. As a WG Chair and Document Leader on different equipment Standards development projects, Frank has led the drafting of the documents and has represented the views of the fabricator interest category as a voting Member of the Working Group and Steering Committee.

Frank is a proud US Army Veteran, serving from 1970 to 1981. He has over 40 years in manufacturing experience, with 35+ years in the Pharmaceutical and Food industries. He has held various positions with a company in Florida that designs and manufactures food packaging machinery and has worked with Food Processers and Sanitarians from the USDA as well as State and local Departments of Agriculture.

Per our Procedures, “the Steering Committee Chair shall:

a) Determine policies and procedures for the committee and Ad Hoc WGs consistent with the general requirements of these Procedures.

b) Administer these policies and procedures for the committee and Ad Hoc WGs.

c) Oversee the current inventory of 3-ASanitary Standards and 3-A Accepted Practices and recommend actions to assure that documents are presented for revision, reaffirmation or withdrawal every five (5) years.

d) Evaluate requests for new 3-A Sanitary Standards and 3-A Accepted Practices activity for relevance to the mission and goals of 3-A SSI and assemble a balanced Ad Hoc WG per project need.

e) Assign priorities for proposed new3-A Sanitary Standards and 3-A Accepted Practices activity and, if necessary, to those in progress.

f) Maintain liaison with other national and international standards development organizations and other bodies as necessary on matters of relevance to 3-ASanitary Standards and 3-A  Accepted Practices.”

Our new Steering Committee Chair is already meeting with Staff and preparing standards development meetings so we may advance projects accordingly. These projects will be following a new set of procedures for the development and maintenance of all draft documents. These projects will be prioritized by the Steering Committee and announced with a call for participation in Ad Hoc Working Groups.
