  • New Standards Development: Agitated Filter Dryers, Vessels and Agitators, Mills and Classification Equipment, and Process Heat Exchangers.

A second, full-day education program, 3-A and Global Hygienic Design, will be held on Tuesday, May 18.  This program will open with the perspectives of U.S. stakeholders—processors, fabricators and regulatory sanitarians—on the emerging food safety legislative/regulatory environment and the implications for 3-A SSI.  Topics and speakers for the program include:

  • 3-A and EHEDG: Partnering in Hygienic Design—Knuth Lorenzen (GEA Tuchenhagen), President, European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) and F. Tracy Schonrock, Chair, 3-A Steering Committee, will assess several harmonization initiatives including valves, glossary of terms, testing requirements and design criteria, assurance of equipment/systems hygienic design, general facility criteria, and other challenges/opportunities.

  • Sanitary Couplings: EHEDG and 3-A—Andrew Timperley, Timperley Consulting, will examine the criteria of 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG for sanitary couplings.  The sanitary aspects of various pipe coupling and fitting designs and the pros and cons of each will be reviewed.

  • Rubber and Plastics Formulations for Food Contact—Mike Zumbrum, ALLPure Technologies Inc. and Roger Avakian, PolyOne, will describe plastics and rubber formulations, the impact of additives, optimizing choices of formulations materials for applications, and detection methods.

  • Evaluating Stainless Steels—Jim Fritz, TMR Stainless, will address corrosion tests appropriate for food industry applications, corrosion limitations of free machining grades of stainless steel such as 303, cleaning and passivation treatments for stainless steel, and experiences with a stainless steel mill and some of the composition considerations.
  • Stainless Casting:  Innovations and Improvements - Raymond Monroe, Steel Founders Society of America, will describe notable recent improvements in efficiency/quality of casting and applications in food/dairy processing equipment.

  • Foreign Matter Testing—John Yacoub and Robert Scott, Safeline Mettler Toledo, will address methodology and equipment for detection of metallic and non-metallic foreign materials.

The 3-A SSI Annual Meeting will open on Wednesday morning, May 19, with reports on 3-A SSI programs and services and a forum on current issues in developing 3-A Sanitary Standards and 3-A Accepted Practices.  Work Group sessions will begin late Wednesday morning and continue through Friday morning, May 21.

Registration is required for all events.  A registration fee applies to the education sessions on May 17 and 18, with a discount available until April 30.  No fee is required for the 3-A SSI Annual Meeting and Working Group meetings, which are open to all interested parties.  Complete program details, including registration information and Work Group meeting schedules, are available on-line at the 3-A SSI website under News & Events, or follow the link directly to:  www.3-a.org/news/events.
